Billy’s Story is Why We Exist
Billy arrived at Bald Ridge Lodge with low expectations and, in his own words, a lot of anger. He didn't want to be here. He didn't see a future worth wanting. When asked what his life ahead looked like, he described it simply as "a blank spot."
What happened next is why BRL exists.
Rather than a revolving door or a temporary holding place, Billy found a community of support. He found staff members who followed through on what they said, who taught him better ways to handle conflict, and who showed up day after day without wavering. For most likely the first time in his life, the adults around him were consistent, safe, and genuinely invested in who he could become. Slowly, that started to change something in him.
Around that same time, a familiar face reappeared. Mike, a person Billy had known before coming to BRL, had rejoined the BRL volunteer team and reconnected with Billy and several other young men. Mike would take him to church, investing in him through mentoring outings, and building a relationship that neither of them fully anticipated.
That relationship has continued to grow. Mike and Billy are exploring a kinship placement together, a significant step that both are approaching with care, prayer, and commitment. It is a journey in the early stage, but it is being walked together.
And Billy? The blank spot is gone. He has interests he is turning into skills, a future path he can picture, and, for the first time, people in his corner who he knows will still be there when the road gets hard.
Billy learned something he didn't expect when he arrived here angry and resistant: the situation you hate the most might be the one that changes everything. And sometimes what sounds like a joke turns out to be a door, if someone is willing to walk through it with you.
