St. Marlo Women’s Club donates to charities

The St. Marlo Women’s Club raised more than $51,000 this year in various events and donated a record $54,587 to various charities. In the nine years the club has been in existence, it has raised and donated in excess of $200,000 to these charities.

This year’s recipients are Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Forsyth County and Crossroads Lodge, a new shelter under way in Cumming that will house boys ages 12-17 in crisis situations such as abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or arrest of one or both parents. A check for $10,000 was given to each charity. A check for $1,500 was also presented to Bosom Buddies of the Georgia Cancer Foundation.

In addition, the Club awarded two scholarships to students at South Forsyth High School at their annual Honors Night on Monday, May 9. A $5,000 award was given to Julianne Kathleen King, daughter of Gordon and Nancy King of Alpharetta. King plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in violin performance and music education, and has been accepted to University of Georgia as well as Universities in Evansville and Wisconsin. A $2,500 award was given to Ashley Marie Whiteman, daughter of Catherine Carlton of Cumming. Whiteman plans to attend Georgia Tech and major in electrical and biomedical engineering.

The young women were chosen from a large field of candidates, and their selection was based on school, extracurricular and community activities and grade point averages.
